Quebec singer Luck Mervil found guilty of sexual assault from 25 years ago

Quebec singer Luck Mervil has been found guilty of sexual assault, 25 years after an incident involving a 19-year-old woman in Rimouski.

A judge handed down the decision Thursday morning saying “it is clear that the victim experienced a sexual assault that evening.”

The victim says it happened in a hotel room after a show on June 23 to 24, 2000. She said the artist drugged her and sexually assaulted her.

Mervil denied the allegations in his testimony during the trial in February. He had argued that he was a mistaken identity throughout his trial, alleging that he was often mistaken for other Black artists at the time.

He is expected to appeal the decision. In a post to Facebook on Thursday, Mervil’s statement said: “we are focusing on the next legal steps and ask that our family’s privacy be respected.”
