Projet Montréal looking to get more people into downtown core

Projet Montréal says they are looking to get more people into downtown Montreal if they win the upcoming municipal election.

“We love our downtown core. It’s the beating heart of Montreal, a space that brings together thousands of residents, workers, merchants, and visitors,” said Luc Rabouin, the leader of Projet Montréal.

“We’ve been bold in this neighbourhood with the work on Sainte-Catherine Street West. Our platform demonstrates the same ambition for what’s next, including the revitalization of new spaces. We are pleased to see that our platform and the demands of the downtown core are closely aligned.”

Projet Montréal is looking to get more Montrealers into the downtown core, it has faced “significant challenges” over the last few years.

Due to this, they are looking at increasing the city budget from $10 million to $20 million allocated to the Downtown Strategy, to increase events and activities in public spaces and in the underground city.

The budget increase will also allow for more maintenance of streets and sidewalks, and allow for more cleaning teams to ensure high-traffic areas are kept in good condition.

Additionally, Projet Montréal says, “To limit the impact of construction sites, Projet Montréal reiterates its commitments to centralized management of construction by a dedicated team, the banning of orange cones on most streets, and the implementation of more user-friendly signage for construction areas.”

While Montreal is full of festivals in the summer, Projet Montréal is also hoping to increase the number of events that happen during the rest of the year.

Part of this plan also includes year-round pedestrianization of Sainte-Catherine Street East.

Projet Montréal also says that they’ll be looking to improve parking by optimize existing spaces and bettering the needs of businesses and customers.
