By The Canadian Press

A driver lost his life in a crash in Sainte-Lucie-de-Beauregard, near the border with the U.S. state of Maine.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 3 a.m. on Saturday on Principale Street, near Route du Lac, in this small municipality of nearly 300 residents in the Chaudière-Appalaches region, in the Montmagny MRC.

“According to initial reports, the driver, who was alone in the vehicle, lost control for reasons that are still unknown at this stage,” said Quebec police (SQ) spokesperson Camille Savoie. “He ended up in a ditch. Then, he hit a culvert and came to a stop against a telecommunications pole. Unfortunately, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. We are talking about a man in his 40s.”

An SQ investigation is underway, and a police officer specializing in collision investigations has been dispatched to the scene.

A toxicological analysis was to be performed on the victim.

The investigation is ongoing.
