Laval police (SPL) are investigating a fire in an apartment building that occurred in the Chomedey area on Tuesday night, that claimed the life of a man.
At around 9:30 p.m. police received a 911 call regarding the blaze on Sainte-Judes Street.
“Several patrol cars and vehicles from the Laval Fire Department were deployed to the scene,” the SPL told CityNews. “Police officers quickly evacuated the premises.”
The Association des pompiers de Laval explained that firefighters attacked the fire on the second floor while searching for potential victims.
“Firefighters also worked to stop the fire from spreading to the roof of the adjoining building,” they said.
According to police, a man inside one of the apartments was transported to hospital – where his death was confirmed.
“The victim unfortunately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. However, this is all we can confirm at this time as we are conducting a coroner’s investigation into the case,” explained the SPAL.
“There is significant damage to the building,” they added. “The evacuated people were taken care of by the Red Cross.”
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
