Santa’s early arrival: Kim Clavel shines as Montreal’s new ‘Star Fairy’

Santa seems to be ahead of schedule this year — and so is the snow. With Montreal already blanketed in an early November snowfall, the city is officially leaning into the holiday spirit with the return of its beloved Santa Claus Parade and the unveiling of its newest holiday icon: Kim Clavel as the ‘Star Fairy’.

The world boxing champion and nurse will lead this year’s 73rd edition of the parade, bringing her trademark strength and compassion to one of Montreal’s most cherished holiday roles.

Organizers say they carefully chose a ‘Star Fairy’ who can inspire children and families alike, representing values that go beyond the holiday season.

“It’s an honour for me to be the Star Fairy, it’s like a dream, I remember as a little girl I always wanted to be a fairy,” said Clavel.

Set for Saturday, Nov. 22 at 11 a.m., the parade will roll down René-Lévesque Boulevard from Drummond Street to Saint-Urbain Street, transforming downtown into a winter wonderland.

With 1,500 performers, over 400 dancers, and a mix of local and international talent, organizers promise a show that blends tradition, inclusivity, and pure joy.

The parade, first held in 1925, remains one of Quebec’s most cherished winter traditions. For many Montrealers, it marks the unofficial start of the holidays — a chance to reconnect with the city’s festive energy after a long fall.

This year’s program will highlight Quebec holiday customs, alongside performances from Irish, Korean, and Mexican dance troupes, reflecting Montreal’s multicultural spirit.

Parade organizers have also been introducing new modern floats as of last year, designed to add a contemporary touch to the classic spectacle while keeping the magic alive for families.

Their newest addition, named the ‘Orchestrarium’, is a musical float, designed to get everyone moving and joining in on the fun.

A highlight for audiences will be the KMTL K-pop dance group, performing routines inspired by Demon Hunters, the popular Netflix show that has gained traction with both young and adult viewers alike.

Audiences can also look forward to a special appearance by Star Académie, performing songs from their newest album.

According to Glenn Castanheira, Executive Director of Montréal centre-ville, with the STM maintenance workers’ strike now officially suspended, the event is highly accessible.

With 10 metro stations along the route, families will have every reason to come downtown and celebrate together.

“It’s important to know that the Santa Claus Parade being in downtown Montreal is the most accessible event in Quebec,” said Castanheira.

Families can expect plenty of holiday cheer downtown, along with the warm glow of returning traditions — and a new Star Fairy ready to lead the way.

“We can expect a fun event, and also an event for just about everyone,” Castanheira said.
