Weekend weather: Up to 5 mm of freezing rain and snow expected in Montreal

"If temperatures turn out to be just slightly cooler, then we could certainly experience some freezing rain," warned meteorologist Serge Besner looking ahead to this weekend's weather which expects snow and freezing rain.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of up to 5 millimetres of freezing rain across parts of southern Quebec this weekend.

The advisory covers the Greater Montreal and the Lower Richelieu regions, with the risk of snow followed by freezing rain beginning Saturday evening and lasting into Sunday morning.

Warning preparedness meteorologist Serge Besner explained, “We have a low pressure system that’s developing over Manitoba… It will be tracking East, Southeast word, generating an area of freezing rain.”

He said the risk is particularly focused on regions stretching from Témiscaming to Gatineau, including Montreal and Sorel-Tracy, where freezing rain remains possible if temperatures dip slightly.

“If temperatures turn out to be just slightly cooler, then we could certainly experience some freezing rain in some of those areas.”

Forecasters warn that surfaces could quickly become icy and slippery and travel could be difficult. Power outages are possible.

Besner noted that early-winter storms often cause problems for drivers:

“If the road surfaces end up becoming below freezing… the freezing rain can accumulate on the roads, making conditions very slippery,” he said. “This time of year… many people are just getting used to winter driving conditions.”

Weekend outlook

Conditions will turn increasingly unsettled heading into the weekend.

Besner said Montreal will likely see snow Saturday morning before a transition later in the day.

Most of the system will pass through overnight into Sunday morning.

On precipitation amounts, Besner said computer models suggest a total of five to 10 millimetres: “It’s gonna depend on whether or not it falls as snow… or mix of rain and snow.”

Temperature-wise, Saturday will be an even 0°C and Sunday it will go up to 3°C during the day and drop to -2°C at night.

Looking ahead to next week

The stormy weekend weather will give way to a quieter pattern next week.

Monday will be cloudy with a high of 1°C, followed by a low of –1°C overnight.

Cloudy conditions continue Tuesday with a high of 2°C.

A mix of sun and cloud is expected Wednesday with a high of 2°C, continuing into Thursday with a high near 3°C.

Before wrapping up, Besner offered one simple reminder:

“Just drive safely and yeah, it’s that time of year. We got to start getting ready.”
