Ricochet shelter on the West Island has added 22 additional beds amid high demand and cold weather setting in.
In a press release Thursday, Ricochet said that it will operate a total of 102 beds through the winter.
The shelter also noted that it has been operating over capacity since September and that each week they have had to turn away 260 people, on average.
Tania Charron, executive director of Ricochet, said, “Adding temporary beds is an essential humanitarian response to winter conditions, but it does not replace long-term solutions.”
“Our focus remains on stabilizing our shelter at 48 permanent emergency beds and developing 60 units of affordable housing to provide lasting support for people experiencing residential instability,” she added.
