Côte Saint-Luc mayor vote: Tordjman officially defeats Brownstein after recount

A recount for the mayor of Côte Saint-Luc confirmed challenger David Tordjman defeated incumbent and longtime mayor Mitchell Brownstein.

A recount of the votes saw Tordjman officially win the race to become Côte Saint-Luc’s next mayor by seven votes, 4,241 to 4,234, with 132 ballots rejected.

“I am humbled by this outcome and deeply aware of the responsibility it carries,” Tordjman told CityNews in a statement. “This result is a reminder of how much every single person’s participation matters, and I am grateful to everyone who made their voice heard.”

A recount request was granted to Brownstein after results published the morning after the Nov. 2 election showed he lost by a single vote — 4,196 votes to 4,195, with 229 ballot papers rejected. Unofficial numbers on election night had Brownstein winning by 50 votes.

Brownstein had been mayor of Côte Saint-Luc, a demerged municipality on the island of Montreal, since 2016.

Tordjman served as city councillor for Côte Saint-Luc’s District 6 from 2017 to 2021.

“I want to extend my sincere thanks to the election officials, recount teams, volunteers, and many legal professionals who guided us through what became quite an extensive process,” Tordjman said. “I would also like to thank Mitchell Brownstein, whom I’ve known for many years, for all his years of service to the city.

“Now together it is time to turn the page and focus our attention to the everyday work of supporting and strengthening our city.”
