Montreal’s Sherbrooke Street West named one of Time Out’s coolest in the world

A Montreal street has cracked the list of top five coolest streets in the world, according to Time Out.

Sherbrooke Street West is the second-longest street on the Island of Montreal and is known for it’s art, museums, and festivals.

The former Indigenous trail, which is honoured through bronze sculptures of Iroquois people, is now part of Montreal’s downtown, which includes the Golden Square Mile.

This section of the street was given the name, as it was home to the city’s aristocracy in the late 1800s, which provided several architectural masterpieces, like the private University Club and other gems like the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and McCord Stewart museum.

Another highlight of Sherbrooke Street West, are some of Montreal’s luxury hotels like the Sofitel and the Ritz-Carlton.

One main feature that can be seen right off the street, on Crescent, is a giant mural of Leonard Cohen on a 21-story building.

But of museums aren’t your cup of tea, Sherbrooke Street West is also home to two “secret” terraces — Maison Alcan and Améa Café.

Three of four of Montreal’s major university’s sit along Sherbrooke Street West, while also being home to several of the city’s colleges.

While Sherbrook Street West did crack the top five coolest streets in the world, it did rank fifth. It was topped by Rio de Janeiro’s Rua do Senado, Osaka’s Orange Street, Porto’s Rua do Bonjardim, and Chengdu’s Fanghua Street.
