Consultations begin on Quebec’s climate targets

Consultations on the revision of Quebec’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction target begin Tuesday morning at the National Assembly.
Following the Paris Agreement in 2015, Quebec set itself the goal of reducing its emissions by 37.5 per cent below 1990 levels by 2030.
“We have completed roughly half the journey since 1990, a reduction of 19 per cent” and “we have five years left to do the other half,” which is a considerable challenge,” said Environment Minister Bernard Drainville at the start of the consultations, which are expected to last several days.
“Yes, we must take care of the climate, but also of the economy and jobs,” he stressed, indicating that the arrival of Donald Trump in the United States had influenced many governments to reduce their climate ambitions.
“The target we choose must be both ambitious and realistic,” Bernard Drainville also mentioned.
The Act specifies that Quebec’s GHG reduction target must be revised no later than Dec. 31, 2025, and it is for this reason that consultations are being conducted by the Transport and Environment Commission.
The chairman of the Advisory Committee on Climate Change, which advises the government, Alain Webster, will be one of the first to speak on Tuesday and is expected to argue that the fight against climate change should not be dependent on the geopolitical context and that Quebec cannot afford to back down in reaction to circumstantial circumstances.
About 10 days ago, this committee issued 11 recommendations for Quebec to revise its targets upwards.
