Montreal firefighters were called to a major fire in St-Leonard on Wednesday morning after a gas-powered car burst into flames inside the garage of a two-storey duplex, causing the blaze to spread throughout the building.
Emergency crews with the Montreal fire department (SIM) received a call at 9:17 a.m. and rushed to the scene on Lacordaire Blvd., near des Galets Street.
Five families were evacuated from the building as firefighters worked to contain the flames. Three of the displaced families received assistance from the Red Cross, while two others, authorities say, made their own arrangements for temporary housing.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
About 55 firefighters were at the scene.
Although the flames were brought under control, firefighters remained on site to carry out their investigation and gather information on how the blaze started.
Montreal police confirmed the case was not been handed over to their investigators, as no criminal element is suspected.
