Saint-Laurent tightens noise rules to curb loud vehicles

The Saint-Laurent borough is tightening its nuisance by-law to curb loud vehicles from cars, commercial vehicles and heavy trucks, adopting new restrictions Tuesday aimed at cutting down on everything from blaring radios to revving engines.

The amendment, approved at the borough council’s Nov. 25 meeting, broadens what counts as excessive vehicle noise.

The list now includes abusive horn use, tire squealing, clattering parts, faulty or overly loud exhaust systems, and engines revved unnecessarily during starts, stops or repeated accelerations. Noise from onboard speakers or sound systems can also be sanctioned.

Mayor Alan DeSousa said the update reflects the borough’s commitment to protecting residents’ quality of life.

“Saint-Laurent is a welcoming place for families, so it is essential to protect their peace and quiet and preserve the quality of life in our neighborhoods,” he said in a press release.

The borough is asking residents and drivers to do their part by reducing avoidable noise and helping maintain what it calls a more harmonious living environment.
