Hydro-Québec to launch new call for tenders for wind energy projects

Hydro-Québec plans to launch a new call for tenders for wind energy projects next spring. Several areas in the southern part of the province have been identified as having the potential to host a wind farm.
The Crown corporation promises to strengthen its criteria to promote Quebec content and social acceptability in this tendering process.
It will place greater emphasis on local content when evaluating projects, which will need to be supported by the municipalities involved in order to receive approval. Hydro-Québec wishes to support projects developed with local communities and First Nations.
These wind farms will be smaller in scale than the larger-scale ones announced in recent months.
The state-owned utility also unveiled on Thursday a map of locations with potential for integrating wind power into the electricity transmission network. It identified 13 industrial sectors where requests for grid connection studies were highest as of December.
The areas presented include regions south of the St. Lawrence River: Bécancour, Sorel-Tracy, Contrecoeur, Varennes, and Beauharnois. Also included are Montréal-Est, Coteau-du-Lac, and regions further north, such as Saguenay, Sept-Îles, Baie-Comeau, and Chibougamau.
