Music celebration to commemorate 50th anniversary of Montreal Olympics

Montreal is marking the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Summer Olympics with a series of events celebrating the city’s Olympic legacy.
The main event will be a free musical performance at Olympic Park on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 9 p.m. Directed and composed by Alex McMahon, the show Feu sacré will feature performances by Ariane Moffatt, Loud, Robert Charlebois, Dubmatique and circus troupe Les 7 doigts.
Organizers say the production will focus on themes of memory, heritage and the future, while bringing together athletes and artists to honour the historic Games.
Olympic icons will also take part in anniversary events, including Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci, who made history in Montreal in 1976 by earning the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics.
Comăneci will receive an honorary doctorate from Université de Montréal and take part in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at Centre Claude-Robillard Friday. She will also join Olympic athletes and officials at the McCord Stewart Museum to visit the exhibition Montreal 1976: An Olympic Legacy.
Followed by “Nadia Day” at the Olympic Park, where people sharing her first name will gather to meet the Romanian gymnastics icon.
The weekend celebrations will also include events highlighting the lasting impact of the Games, including a fencing demonstration with Olympic fencing champion Thomas Bach and Canadian Olympic Committee president Tricia Smith.
The Esplanade Pie-IX du Parc olympique opens at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
