Montreal braces for frigid stretch

Montreal is heading into several days of deep cold before a brief warm-up arrives late next week.

Today will be mainly cloudy with a brisk west wind at 30 km/h, gusting to 50. The high will reach minus -5 Celsius, though the wind chill will feel closer to minus -20 C this morning and minus -12 C this afternoon.

“We’ve seen about 14 to 17 centimetres of snow over the last few days,” said Serge Besner, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). “Montreal is currently reporting 18 centimetres of snow on the ground. We started out with only three centimetres, so that’s about 15 centimetres of new accumulation.”

“Today we may see some drifting snow,” warned Besner. “If you’re planning on driving today or tonight, that could affect road conditions,” Berner said.

Tonight brings partly cloudy skies. West winds of 20 km/h, gusting to 40, will become light near midnight. The temperature will drop to minus -9 C, with a wind chill near minus -14 C.

“We’re expecting a bit more snow late tonight into tomorrow morning, with another centimetre or so of flurry activity,” Besner said.

Saturday turns mainly cloudy with light snow beginning in the morning and winds up to 15 km/h. The high will be minus -2 C, with wind chills of minus -12 C in the morning and minus -7 C in the afternoon. Cloudy periods continue Saturday night with a low of minus -7 C.

“Conditions will clear up this weekend,” said Besner. “We should see sunnier weather from Sunday through Monday, which will also bring colder temperatures, below seasonal average.”

Sunday features a mix of sun and cloud and a high of minus -5 C, followed by cloudy periods at night and a low of minus -12 C.

Monday sees increasing cloudiness and a high of minus -8 C, with a cloudy night ahead and a low of minus -8 C.

“Another weather system is expected to move in toward the middle or end of next week,” he added. “There is a possibility it could change to rain late on Thursday, but it’s too early to have high confidence in that.”
