Mont-Sainte-Anne opening postponed after ski lift closure

By The Canadian Press

The Mont-Sainte-Anne ski resort is postponing its opening after the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) ordered the closure of four ski lifts.

The Beaupré, Que., resort was scheduled to open Saturday.

The shutdown ordered on Friday by the RBQ affects the Express du Nord, Express du Sud, Étoile filante, and Panorama Express lifts.

The RBQ made the decision following inspections carried out on Wednesday, Dec. 10, in connection with a failure in the 25,000-volt high-voltage network that powers the buildings, ski lifts, and snowmaking system at the ski resort.

“The inspection revealed that the failure affecting an underground section of the electrical network prevented the normal and safe operation of the equipment covered by the order, which constitutes a danger to people’s safety and physical integrity,” the RBQ said in a news release.

“In addition, the seriousness of the violations observed in recent years creates an emergency situation that requires the RBQ to intervene without delay to prevent irreparable harm to the public,” it added.

The RBQ said it sent a ban on the use of this equipment to representatives of the Mont-Sainte-Anne resort by email on Dec. 5.

Mont-Sainte-Anne indicated in a post on its Facebook page that the resort’s opening had been postponed and the organization would provide an update on Monday.

The RBQ specified that, in order for the lifts to reopen, “the operator must demonstrate that it meets the conditions imposed.”
