Mandatory training for new truck drivers in Quebec comes into effect

Starting Monday, truck drivers are required to undergo mandatory training to obtain a licence.

Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility Jonatan Julien announced Monday, in a press release, that those seeking a Class 1 driver’s licence must complete one of ministry’s two approved training programs:

  • Road Safety Education Program (PESR – Class 1) offered by a training provider recognized by Quebec’s auto-insurance board (SAAQ);
  • Truck transportation training program leading to a vocational studies diploma (DEP) from the Quebec Ministry of Education.

PESR – Class 1 training lasts a minimum of 125 hours and includes 75 hours of theory and 50 hours of practical training.

Those with a valid Class 1 license are not required to take the mandatory training.

“Transitional measures are in place to allow drivers who had already begun the process of obtaining a Class 1 license to continue under the regulations in effect before December 15, under certain conditions,” the ministry said.

Financial assistance is available those wishing to undertake the training.
