Family, friends group win $5M Lotto ahead of holidays

A group of 19 family and friends — formed 30 years ago — won the Lotto 6/49 Classic Jackpot in the Dec. 3 draw, worth $5 million ahead of the holidays, Loto-Québec said in a press release.

“I’m happier to share the prize with the group than I would have been if I had won it alone,” said group leader Jean-Guy Lavoie, who bought the winning ticket at a Couche-Tard store in Baie-Comeau.

The group has played the same combination in Lotto 6/49 for thirty years.

Lavoie’s partner Marie-Christine Jean, was the first to see the draw results on television. “Those look like our numbers!” she alerted Lavoie before the couple confirmed the results on the Loto-Québec app.

The news of the victory came as a surprise to Lavoie’s children whom he had added to the group without their knowledge.

“The Lotto 6/49 Classic Jackpot has been won 10 times in Québec in 2025. It’s wonderful to see families and friends sharing a jackpot as the year comes to a close,” said Isabelle Jean, executive vice president at Loto-Québec.

The winners plan to treat themselves to gifts for the holidays and to invest.

Loto-Québec said another $5 million Classic Jackpot ticket sold in Laval last Saturday, Dec. 13 has also won a prize and is yet to be claimed. Those who bought tickets are asked to check their numbers.
