First measles case confirmed in Montreal

The number of confirmed cases of measles in the province has increased from 3 to 7 in recent days, including one infected person residing in Montreal.

The highly contagious virus has now been reported in the Laurentians, Laval, Lanaudière and Montreal.

Public Health is urging residents to ensure their vaccinations are up to date, stressing that 95 per cent population coverage is needed to prevent further spread.

In Montreal, vaccination rates remain below that threshold, with 72 per cent of children aged one to four immunized against measles. Regional public health director Dr. Mylène Drouin has reminded parents of the importance of vaccination ahead of the holiday season, a period marked by increased travel and gatherings.

Measles has no specific treatment and typically causes fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash appearing several days after symptoms begin.
