Montreal man charged after woman allegedly pushed from third-floor balcony

A woman is in critical condition after being allegedly pushed from a third-floor balcony on Thursday morning in the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough. She was taken to hospital and a 31-year-old man was arrested.

A 31-year-old woman remains in critical condition after allegedly being pushed from a third-floor balcony Thursday morning in Montreal’s Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.


Incident reported around 8:15 a.m.

Montreal police (SPVM) say they received a 911 call around 8:15 a.m. reporting that a woman had fallen from an apartment building on Sainte-Catherine Street East, near Jeanne-d’Arc Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found the woman unconscious on the sidewalk. Police say she landed on her head and was transported to hospital, where she remains in critical condition. Her life is still in danger.

Altercation allegedly escalated on balcony

According to witnesses who spoke with police, an altercation broke out on a third-floor balcony between the woman and a man. During the dispute, the man allegedly pushed the woman off the balcony.

The victim was found lying on the ground on Sainte-Catherine Street.

“We had information that it seems an altercation escalated between that woman and a man on the balcony,” said SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant.


Suspect charged with aggravated assault

Police say a 31-year-old man was arrested at the scene. He appeared before a judge by phone Friday morning and remains in custody.

The suspect faces a charge of aggravated assault. Under the Criminal Code, aggravated assault applies when someone “injures, maims or disfigures the complainant or endangers their life.”

Authorities have not provided information about a possible relationship between the suspect and the victim.
