Third-alarm fire forces evacuations in Montreal-North amid cold weather

By News Staff

Firefighters battled a third-alarm blaze in Montreal-North on Tuesday evening, prompting the evacuation of residents as temperatures dropped.

The Montreal Fire Department said in a post on X shortly after 6 p.m. that a fire had broken out near the intersection of Arthur-Chevrier St. and Rolland Blvd., warning of a possible power outage in the area.

According to Éric Lafrance of the Montreal Fire Department, the fire broke out in a three-storey residential building. Eight families were relocated as a result of the blaze while crews worked to bring the fire under control.

Lafrance said the fire is believed to have been caused by a cigarette.

Montreal police were called in to control traffic, and authorities urged the public to avoid the sector.

Jean-Pierre Brabant, a media relations officer with the Montreal police (SPVM), told CityNews there were no reported injuries, but the situation remained ongoing. When CityNews spoke with him around 8:15 p.m., streets in the area were still being closed.
