Mini reshuffle: Jean Boulet takes over Economy, Charette takes over Environment

By Caroline Plante, The Canadian Press

François Legault readjusts his cabinet: Jean Boulet adds economy and energy to his responsibilities at labour, while Benoit Charette takes over environment while retaining infrastructure.

These changes, which will be announced Monday afternoon following a special cabinet meeting, are necessary due to the leadership race in the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ).

According to the rules of the race, ministers who wish to run for Legault’s succession must relinquish their ministerial responsibilities.

This is the case for Christine Fréchette, who was minister of economy and energy, and Bernard Drainville, who held the environment portfolio. Both launched their campaigns over the weekend.

Legault announced his resignation on Jan. 14, saying he understood that Quebecers were hungry for change.

He indicated that he would step down as soon as a replacement was chosen. The new CAQ leader, who will be the de facto premier of Quebec, will be elected on April 12.
