UQAM asking for financing to revamp Quartier Latin pavilions

The Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) is asking the Quebec government for $190 million in funding to renovate its Hubert-Aquin, Thérèse-Casgrain and Paul-Gérin-Lajoie pavilions, located in the Quartier Latin, in downtown Montreal, where construction work is ongoing.

The project would include the modernization of the university’s library so it would be accessible from the street as well as the construction of “La Maison du Quartier Latin” which would be located on the corner of Sainte-Catherine Street East and Saint-Denis and would offer cultural and educational services to citizens.

The funds would also be used to modernize the Paul-Gérin-Lajoie pavilion where those studying to become teachers are trained.

The university says labs would be created to stimulate the future of classrooms in Quebec and would welcome youth.

The university says it hopes to contribute to the revitalization of the Quartier Latin and promote a downtown environment that is more inclusive and safer, not only for students but all Montrealers.
