Quebec composer Peter Peter scores big win with ‘Heated Rivalry’

“Music is part of the sensation,” said Peter Peter, composer of the score for the hit series 'Heated Rivalry', as the Canadian streaming phenomenon shines a light on Quebec talent. Johanie Bouffard reports.

The Canadian streaming sensation “Heated Rivalry” is shining a light on Quebec talent.

Singer-songwriter Peter Peter says his career took an unexpected turn after receiving an Instagram message from Montreal director and screenwriter Jacob Tierney, asking if he’d be interested in composing the show’s score.

“And he messaged me two months later, because they found the network,” sad the Quebec musician. “It was like, ‘yeah, so now Crave is with us. So let’s hop on a call.’ And we talked for about an hour; he presented the whole project. And I was really into it right at the start.

“It’s not something I anticipated when I said yes to scoring a show, I thought I’d be more in the shadow, but yeah. So the music is part of the sensation.”

The series follows two rival hockey players, Canadian Shane Hollander and Russian Ilya Rozanov, whose rivalry hides a passionate and complicated romance.

With its provocative premise and steamy scenes, Peter Peter, who is originally from Chicoutimi, Que., viewed the music as a way to deepen the emotional build-up with a subtle blend of tension and tenderness.

“In the script that was really, I knew it was like a romance but I wanted to put the emphasis on love more than just like sex and steamy scenes, you know? So I really wanted to tell a love story because it’s what I think is beautiful about this show,” the composer said.

The lead singles from the “Heated Rivalry” soundtrack, “Rivalry” and “It’s you,” made it onto the Billboard charts.

“It’s crazy to see compositions of mine on another level of audience since it’s not in French also, it’s more like worldwide,” Peter Peter told CityNews. “So it’s very impressive how numbers can get.”

As the series gained global attention, fans began sharing the music everywhere — from violin covers to packed dancefloors.

“Being a particle, even just being a particle in this whole phenomenon brings a lot of spotlight. So I’m very grateful for that.”

A second season of Heated Rivalry has been confirmed, and while discussions for another collaboration are promising, Peter Peter is keeping expectations in check.

“Even for season one, when it was signed, I wasn’t like too willing to talk about it because I was just afraid it would just eventually fail to happen. But yeah, it’s looking good. Let’s say it’s looking good, but yeah, nothing signed yet.”
