Judges with inappropriate behavior: Simon Jolin-Barrette wants to impose tougher penalties

By Thomas Laberge, The Canadian Press

Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette is cracking down on judges with inappropriate behaviour by giving the Judicial Council more powers to intervene.

Bill 25, which was tabled in the National Assembly on Wednesday, creates a series of new sanctions for judges who are the subject of a complaint.

A judge found at fault could, for example, be suspended for a maximum of six months without pay.

The Judicial Council may also order a judge to undergo training or therapy.

Before the bill, there were only two possible sanctions: reprimand or dismissal.

Last week, the JE program reported examples of several judges who have behaved in a manner that violates their code of ethics.
