Freezing rain warning issued for Montreal as icy commute expected Thursday morning

A brief but potentially hazardous period of freezing rain is expected to sweep across the Greater Montreal area overnight, raising concerns about slippery roads and difficult travel conditions during the Thursday morning commute.
Environment And Climate Change Canada (ECCC) officials say a warm front moving into the region will begin with light snow this evening before transitioning to freezing rain overnight and into early Thursday morning. Up to two millimetres of ice accretion is possible, enough to create locally icy and hazardous surfaces on untreated roads, sidewalks and overpasses.
Motorists are being advised to exercise caution, as the timing of the freezing rain could lead to slower travel and delays during the Thursday rush hour.
Temperatures are expected to climb above the freezing mark Thursday morning, changing the precipitation to rain and reducing the risk of further ice buildup. The day’s high is forecast to reach 9 Celsius, with periods of rain continuing into the afternoon and evening.
Looking ahead, conditions will shift quickly in the days that follow. Friday is expected to bring sunny skies with a high near zero, followed by a sharp drop in temperature Friday night to minus–12 C under clear skies.
The weekend will remain mostly bright but chilly, with sunny conditions Saturday and a high of minus–3 C, before moderating slightly Sunday with a high of 6 C. A mix of rain showers or flurries is expected Sunday night.
The start of next week will bring unsettled weather, with periods of snow or rain Monday and a high of 8 C, followed by cloudy periods and a low of minus–6 C Monday night.
Officials urge residents to stay updated on weather alerts and allow extra time for travel Thursday morning as conditions may change rapidly overnight.
