Montreal gas prices nearing $2 per litre as Mideast tensions push costs higher

Gas prices in Montreal are climbing toward $2 per litre, with analysts warning the mark could be reached this week amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In Verdun, stations along de l’Église Street near Champlain Boulevard were selling fuel at $1.93 per litre.

The increases are not being driven by supply shortages in North America, but by market speculation linked to the conflict overseas. Fuel companies have also added to the volatility by raising retail margins by about three cents per litre.

Rising tensions around key shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, have driven up crude oil prices, pushing higher costs for both gasoline and jet fuel.

The impact is also being felt at Montréal-Trudeau International Airport, where travellers may face higher airfares as airlines contend with rising fuel costs.
