A residential project in Old Montreal has been paused due to citizen concerns.
The building which was expected to be built at 810 Saint-Antoine Est street and consist of 653 units is currently on hold due to its 18 story height.
The developers had to request an exemption because the project is higher than the six floor height maximum permitted in the borough.
Nearly 500 citizens had called for a referendum on the decision to move forward.
At the Ville-Marie borough council meeting Tuesday, Claude Pinard, the president of the executive committee and a city councillor in Ville-Marie, said they would not be holding a referendum but the project would not go forward in its current format.
He said the construction of new housing projects remains a priority but that citizens have spoken and they respect their choice.
Pinard added that they will be discussing with Broccolini and Pur Immobilia, who are the developers, to see how the project could still move forward.
In an email sent to CityNews Broccolini says they remain committed to delivering the project.
“Broccolini and PUR Immobilia are actively collaborating on next steps and remain committed to a constructive dialogue, with the objective of delivering a project of lasting value for the neighbourhood.”
