Homelessness in Montreal: City adding crisis unit within tactical intervention group, mayor says

The City of Montreal will be adding a crisis unit within its tactical intervention group (GITI) to continue addressing the homeless situation in the city.

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada teased the announcement Tuesday, saying more details would be revealed Wednesday.

“Tomorrow we will have more to say in terms of what we are going to be announcing to deal with the solutions that we’re going to put in place to help with the encampments,” she told reporters at city hall.

The GITI, which was launched in February, is a 12-member group made up of elected officials and community partners that meets every two weeks to find solutions to existing issues related to homelessness, such as encampments, cohabitation and prevention.

The body replaced a crisis unit established in December 2025.

“We are very worried with the encampments,” Martinez Ferrada said. “As you know, the pressure is rising. First of May, first of June, first of July is coming. We see what’s happening on the streets of Montreal.”

One particular encampment in Montreal has never been bigger, according to a media report. TVA Nouvelles says there were 95 tents at the Notre-Dame Street encampment as of Tuesday morning.

Montreal’s mayor has repeatedly indicated finding solutions to homelessness is a top priority for her administration.
