Worker impaled by steel rod rescued at Kirkland construction site

A rescue operation by Montreal firefighters saved a construction worker who was impaled by a steel rod after falling into a deep formwork at a major construction site in Kirkland on Thursday morning.
The worker suffered an abdominal injury when he fell and was pierced by a metal rod. Despite the serious wound, he remained conscious throughout the rescue and was moved to a footbridge several metres above the site while awaiting help.
Firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department’s Technical Rescue Team deployed a ladder truck and lowered a rescue sled to reach the victim. Assisted by firefighters, the worker was able to stand and climb into the sled before being hoisted to safety using a rope-and-pulley system attached to the truck’s ladder.
The rescue was completed in less than an hour. The worker was then transported by ambulance to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The accident occurred along Brunswick Boulevard at the future site of Lacey Green Village, a major residential development expected to include about 1,000 housing units.
“CNESST inspectors are on site to gather information to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident. Generally, our inspectors interview witnesses and inquire about work methods, equipment, worker supervision, training, and work experience,” a spokesperson for the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) told CityNews.
