Quebec launches task force to overhaul South Shore’s Route 132

By Samira Ait Kaci Ali, The Canadian Press

After several years of waiting and complaints from municipal officials, redevelopment work will begin on a section of Route 132, between the municipalities of Saint-Constant and Delson, on the South Shore (Montreal).

While in Saint-Constant, Premier Christine Fréchette announced Saturday morning the establishment of a project office for the redevelopment of this section of road which also crosses the municipality of Sainte-Catherine.

Currently, the road consists solely of several lanes for vehicles. The project aims to transform this section into an urban boulevard, notably by integrating bike paths, sidewalks, and lanes reserved for public transit.

The project office will be composed of urban planning specialists, engineers and other professionals who have the mandate to build an opportunity case detailing the estimated costs and timeline as well as the routes that will be selected.

This first stage, dedicated to the analysis of various solutions, should conclude in 2027, indicated the Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Benoit Charette, during the press briefing.

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake will participate in the project as a partner, stressed the Minister responsible for Relations with First Nations and Inuit, Ian Lafrenière, who was also present at the announcement.
