Westmount extends weekly garbage collection, even as Montreal moves to biweekly pickup

Weekly garbage collection will be maintained in Westmount this coming October, even though the garbage pickup schedule was supposed to return to biweekly at the end of September 2026.
The city’s municipal council voted earlier this month to extend weekly pickup for the next seven months, because the population is having a hard time with a reduced collection schedule, according to Westmount Mayor Michael Stern.
Many residents argue that delayed garbage pickup doesn’t necessarily reduce garbage but contributes to added smells and inconveniences.
In the meantime, more Montreal municipalities and boroughs are reducing garbage pickup to reach targets set by both the City of Montreal and the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (CMM).
The CMM has set December 2027 as the deadline by which all municipalities must comply with a maximum of 26 household garbage collections per year — or biweekly pickup.
Montreal’s target for all 19 boroughs is 2029. So far, the boroughs of Saint-Laurent, Verdun and Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve have begun implementing biweekly waste collections, and other boroughs are expected to follow suit.
Biweekly collection is set to resume in Westmount in April 2027.
