33-year-old man charged with attempted murder of Montreal police officer

A 33-year-old Montreal man is facing an attempted murder charge after a police officer was stabbed during an intervention in the city’s Saint-Michel neighbourhood Wednesday afternoon.
Police were called to a home on 14th Avenue, near Émile-Journault Avenue, around 3:23 p.m. on Aug. 19 following a 911 call about a person acting erratically inside a residence , according to the Quebec Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI).
Officers arrived at about 3:28 p.m. and came into contact with the person.
The BEI says an altercation followed and the person was armed with a bladed weapon. Police then fired their guns at the person, who was injured by police gunfire.
The person received first aid from officers at the scene and was taken to hospital, where the BEI said his condition was considered stable.
Court records identify the accused as Lorvens Joseph. He is charged with attempted murder, and attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer acting in the execution of his duties.
Joseph also faces two charges alleging that he breached conditions of an undertaking involving the woman. The allegations state that he failed to comply with conditions prohibiting him from communicating, directly or indirectly, with her and from coming within 100 meters of her.
The BEI opened an independent investigation into the police intervention at 5:09 p.m. Wednesday. Six BEI investigators have been assigned to the case, while the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is providing police support and is conducting a parallel criminal investigation into the events.
The BEI says its investigation is ongoing.
