Quebec’s transport ministry will carry out emergency repair work on the Honoré-Mercier Bridge this weekend after the crack in the steel beam was found be bigger than initially thought. The bridge remains safe for use, the ministry says.
The maintenance work on the bridge connecting Montreal and Kahnawàke is expected to take place between 3 a.m., Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday.
“Once the repairs are complete, all lanes will be reopened to traffic,” the transport ministry, said in a press release Thursday. “Every effort is being made to ensure that the lanes are reopened as soon as possible.”
A lane on the Mercier Bridge heading into Montreal has been closed since Tuesday after Transports Québec said that it was still in planning stages for repairs to the bridge.

As drivers heading northbound continued to deal with congestion following the lane closure, reports raised concerned about the overall state of the bridge.
Journal de Montréal reported that the southbound section of the bridge constructed in 1933 is reportedly in worse condition, according to the ministry’s inspection reports from October 2025. Tuesday’s closure of one of the northbound lanes, built in 1961, due to a cracked beam shows the progress of the structure’s deterioration.
Transports Québec said Wednesday that after analyzing data collected that only one lane will remain open toward Montreal and with congestion expected during the morning rush hour.
To help ease traffic, westbound Highway 30 tolls will be suspended on weekdays from 5:30 to 9:30 a.m., starting Thursday.
The closure caused significant congestion Thursday morning, with some drivers reporting trips taking far longer than usual, according to reports.
Transports Québec says the lane will remain closed until engineers determine the necessary repairs and establish a timeline for the work.
Motorists are encouraged to check Québec 511 for updates and consider carpooling, public transit or alternate routes, including the Champlain Bridge.
