Quebecers getting tricked into Halloween online scam

Fraudsters are using Halloween as an opportunity to trick Quebecers into handing over their personal and banking information in exchange for fake treats and prizes.

Officials say fraudulent text messages are being sent promising fake prizes, gift cards and Halloween party invitations. Some messages offer a $500 IGA gift card.

Once the message is received, cybercriminals invite victims to click through to a website. Internet users are then asked to identify themselves and enter sensitive information, such as bank details, to claim their alleged prize.

Fraudsters have used 107 fraudulent domain names to trick citizens. The phishing messages are personalized with recipients’ names.

The scammers have reportedly also sent fraudulent Halloween messages in the United States, Germany, Belgium and Ireland.

Quebecers are being urged not to click on suspicious links or share personal or financial details to claim unexpected prizes.
