Quebec premier accepts invitation to meet with Carney, insists on Quebec City as venue

By The Canadian Press

Following the tensions that marked the Canada-European Union Summit, Quebec Premier Paul St-Pierre Plamondon has agreed to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney before the Francophonie Summit in November, on the condition that the meeting take place in Quebec City.

In a post shared on social media on Sunday, St-Pierre Plamondon said he was accepting Carney’s invitation and thanked him “for his change in tone.”

“Unsurprisingly, I simply ask that this meeting be held in accordance with Quebec law, specifically the National Capital Commission Act, which stipulates that meetings of this nature must take place in Quebec City,” wrote the Quebec premier.

In an interview published in the daily newspaper La Presse on Saturday, Prime Minister Carney stated that he wanted to meet with St-Pierre Plamondon before the Francophonie Summit to set common goals ahead of the summit and to ensure a good relationship between Ottawa and Quebec.

Tensions between the two premiers were evident on the sidelines of the Canada-European Union Summit, which took place in Montreal last week. St-Pierre Plamondon did not attend the event, as Ottawa refused to grant him an official speaking slot. He had lamented that the federal government had “decided to exclude Quebec from the discussions” taking place there.

The Francophonie Summit, scheduled for Nov. 14–16, will be held in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. St-Pierre Plamondon has indicated that he will lead the Quebec delegation there.
