Montreal gas prices soar as records break in Canada

Gas prices are creating headaches for many Canadians, with records breaking across the country and in Montreal, too.

Over the weekend, Montreal saw prices cross the $2 a litre mark for regular gas, with the average hovering around $2.03 Monday.

In some cases over the past couple of days, prices hit as high as $2.07/litre.

According to GasBuddy, the price at the pump is up about 11 cents from last week’s averages in Montreal.

Nationally, the average increase was about 9.4 cents a litre to about $1.89.

Quebec drivers may take solace in the fact they aren’t paying some of the prices other Canadians are. In Vancouver, prices for a litre of regular soared past the $2.20/litre mark over the weekend.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Ontario, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area, drivers saw increases pushing gas prices to around $1.99/litre.

Across Canada, some people have had to come up with creative or new options to get some sense of relief.

“I’ve considered leaving the job site I’m on, finding a new one where I know a couple of other guys are coming down just to carpool, save some money,” one man told CityNews. “It’s pretty bad.”

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is a major factor in the pressure on prices. However, some experts say even if the war comes to an end in the near future, prices will remain high due to ongoing sanctions against Russia.

The demand for refined gasoline has not been able to keep pace with the increased demand of North American exports going overseas, an issue exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. The demand for gasoline remains high despite the soaring consumer prices.
