MONTREAL – A 47-year-old man who was stabbed Monday morning at a busy downtown Montreal intersection has succumbed to his injuries in hospital, the Montreal police force (SPVM) has confirmed. This marks the 28th homicide in Montreal this year.

The 47-year-old man was found wounded around 10 a.m. at the intersection of de Maisonneuve Ouest and Jeanne-Mance Street, near Place des Arts and Place des festivals.

The SPVM quickly confirmed that he had sustained injuries to his upper body caused by a sharp object.

By mid-afternoon, the Montreal police force said it was investigating an armed stabbing in the case. Then, a few hours later, the investigation became one for murder, as the man died of his injuries in hospital.

“The investigation was transferred to the SPVM’s Major Crimes Section,” said Constable Jean-Pierre Brabant, spokesperson for the Montreal police force.

According to initial information obtained by investigators, this was a conflict that escalated between the victim and another person. Police are still looking for a suspect in the case, so no arrests had been made so far.

“Investigators are being assisted by forensic identification technicians to analyze the scene, get more information and view surveillance cameras to learn more about the circumstances and (obtain) details about the suspect who may have been involved in this event,” added Brabant.

This is the 28th murder to occur on the island of Montreal in 2023. The death toll jumped last week when the SPVM confirmed that the fire in a heritage building in Old Montreal in March was of criminal origin. The seven victims of this fire have now been added to the list of murder victims.
