Quebec residential construction strike: parties meet in mediation

By The Canadian Press

The Alliance syndicale de la construction and the Association des professionnels de la construction et de l’habitation du Québec (APCHQ) will meet in mediation on Thursday afternoon – the second day of the residential construction strike.

The mediator assigned to the case convened the two parties, the Alliance and the APCHQ said on Thursday.

This does not necessarily mean there will be movement at the negotiating table. Conciliators and mediators sometimes want to verify whether the parties are still entrenched in their respective positions or whether they are willing to change them.

Conciliators and mediators are impartial third parties whose role is to facilitate dialogue between the parties.

The residential construction strike began Wednesday morning after final talks between the APCHQ and the Alliance syndicale on Tuesday failed to reach an agreement to renew the collective agreement for the years 2025 to 2029.

The three other sectors of the construction industry have reached settlements, even before the agreements expired on April 30. These are civil engineering/roads, industrial, and institutional/commercial.
