A state funeral will be held in memory of Serge Fiori

By The Canadian Press

A national funeral will be held in honor of singer-songwriter Serge Fiori, in accordance with his family’s wishes.

This event will take the form of a “national tribute ceremony,” Premier François Legault announced in a press release Friday morning.

The Quebec flag on the central tower of the Parliament Building will also be flown at half-mast on the day of the ceremony.

A book of condolences is now available online, allowing citizens who wish to express their sympathies to the family of the founding artist of the band Harmonium.

The date and location of the ceremony will be announced in the coming days, the press release states.

“Quebec was overcome with profound sadness on our National Holiday at the news of Serge Fiori’s passing. It is an immense loss for our nation,” Legault stated in the same document. “We will pay him a national tribute worthy of his legacy.”

Fiori died on Tuesday, at the age of 73, on Quebec’s National Day.

Fiori’s musical career truly took off in 1974 with the release of the self-titled album “Harmonium.” The song “Pour un instant” would become a classic of Quebec music.

The band would only release two more albums—”Si on avait besoin d’une cinque saison” and “L’Heptade”—before disbanding, leaving a lasting mark on Quebec’s cultural universe.
