Laval police (SPL) are warning the public to be alert after over 40 people have reported being the victims of distraction theft.
Between Apr. 1 and Aug. 20, the SPL said that they received over 40 complaints of thefts.
It is believed that jewelry is being stolen from individuals and that seniors are mostly being targeted.
Through an investigation, police believe that suspects approach people under various pretexts, like asking for directions or recommending a restaurant in the area.
Once the conversation has started, the suspect then tries to thank the individual with a piece of jewelry as a “gift”. Police say this is when the victim’s real jewelry is taken.
Additionally, police believe that the suspects are mainly from Eastern Europe, and note that most incidents happen in public places like shopping center parking lots.
Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and keep in mind the following tips:
- Stay alert to your surroundings, especially in busy public places.
- Be wary of strangers who try to distract you or engage you in unusual conversation.
- Keep a safe distance from any stranger who approaches you without a clear reason.
- Refuse any jewelry or objects that a stranger tries to give you or place on your clothing or around your neck.
- Do not accept unsolicited hugs or physical gestures, even if they are offered as a thank you.
- Report any suspicious situation to the police immediately, even if no theft has occurred. Your vigilance may prevent other incidents.
Anyone who believes they are a victim or who might have any information regarding the matter is asked to contact investigators at 450-662-4636.
