The union representing 6,600 blue-collar workers employed by the City of Montreal has just requested mediation in hopes of advancing negotiations for the renewal of its collective agreement.
The collective agreement for this local branch of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), affiliated with the FTQ, expired on December 31.
The request for mediation comes after 21 rounds of negotiations.
At a general meeting on September 6.98 per cent of blue-collar workers voted in favour of a mandate for pressure tactics that could include an unlimited general strike.
According to the Syndicat des cols bleus regroupés de Montréal, the dispute concerns wages, the use of subcontractors, and work-life balance.
The City of Montreal is facing a significant financial challenge. It is forecasting a shortfall of $228 million for 2026 and must find ways to increase its revenues or reduce its expenditures.
