Pair of 15-year-olds arrested in Montreal for pepper spray robberies tied to online ads: SPVM

Montreal police (SPVM) have arrested two suspects in connection to a chain of online robberies made via ad platforms in the Anjou, Saint-Léonard and Mercier–Hochelaga–Maisonneuve boroughs, on Nov. 5.

The suspects, who both 15 years old, allegedly used cayenne pepper to assault and rob their victims, according to the SPVM. According to police, the two would lure prospective buyers in-person to rob them.

“The SPVM would like to take this opportunity to remind citizens to exercise caution when completing transactions initiated online,” Montreal police said in a press release. “Using a secure exchange area is an excellent way to reduce the likelihood of falling prey to fraudsters or attackers.”

Police are also urging online buyers to exercise caution when dealing with shady vendors whose identity is unknown.

“If possible, ask someone you trust to be with you at the time of the transaction,” they added.

Authorities have since conducted searches of both suspects’ homes, where various pieces of evidence were collected.

Both minors appeared in custody before the Youth Division of the Court of Quebec on November 6 to face charges including robbery, possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offense, possession of stolen property and obstruction.

They have both since been released with conditions, including a curfew.
