City of Montreal works to repair streets amid pothole surge

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada says the city is facing a “catastrophic” situation on its streets as potholes multiply following the winter season.

“Streets are nearly impassable, It’s a major issue for us right now,” said Martinez Ferrada.

Ferrada noted that residents have expressed frustration over the lack of visible repairs on major arteries like Sherbrooke Street.

Martinez Ferrada said the city is operating in emergency mode to patch potholes but faces equipment shortages.

“25 per cent of our equipment doesn’t work or is missing,” said Martinez Ferrada. “We are working with the boroughs to ensure we have the tools needed to repair streets.”

The mayor acknowledged that spring thaw will likely worsen conditions.

“The worst is yet to come, when the thaw happens, that’s when we’ll really need to make permanent repairs,” said Martinez Ferrada.

City officials are preparing an action plan to address the problem and prevent a repeat next winter.

“We are going through each borough to identify needs and equipment for next year,” added Martinez Ferrada. “We have an action plan for spring and summer to repair streets.”

Drivers are being warned to exercise caution.

“I can’t promise all streets will be repaired tomorrow morning. I ask people to slow down and be careful to avoid damaging their vehicles,” said Martinez Ferrada.
