Two ceremonies were held Wednesday in Montreal to honour the police officer and civilian killed in Monday’s deadly shooting in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood.

Family and community members gathered to pay tribute to Michel Moshe Mizrahi, the 68-year-old bystander killed in the attack. Those who spoke in his memory said he spent his final moments warning others to flee from the gunfire.

During the gathering, Mizrahi’s son, Shlomi Mizrahi, told mourners that his father was his best friend and “died a hero.”

Jewish community leader Rabbi Mendel Raskin described Mizrahi as a generous man who was always ready to help others.

Organizers said Mizrahi will be buried in Israel, where his family will also sit shiva, the traditional Jewish mourning period.

His obituary says he will be remembered for his “immense generosity, his joy of life and the many ways in which he helped make the lives of others better.”

Officer remembered

Montreal police also confirmed that a private ceremony was planned for Officer Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, who was killed while responding to the active shooter incident.

The 34-year-old officer had been with the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) since 2021. In a statement, the force praised “his sense of duty, his dedication and his professionalism.”

Discussions are underway to organize a civic ceremony to honour Benredouane’s life and service.

Investigation continues

Monday’s shooting left three people dead, including Benredouane, Mizrahi and the suspect, who was killed during a confrontation with police.

A second police officer was critically injured and has since been upgraded to stable condition. A civilian sustained minor injuries.

The suspected gunman, identified as Seth Scott Hatfield, a 25-year-old from Lethbridge, Alta., had reportedly written a manifesto before carrying out the attack, according to several media reports.

The criminal investigation is being led by the Sûreté du Québec, while the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes is examining the police response.

Meanwhile, Quebec National Day celebrations planned for Côte-des-Neiges were cancelled.

SDC Côte-des-Neiges said the decision was made out of respect for the community and to avoid large gatherings following the tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and all those affected by this tragedy that has shaken our neighbourhood,” the organization said in a social media post.
