RCMP arrest Montreal youth over alleged school attack plans

The RCMP arrested a Montreal youth Friday morning after investigators said he was allegedly planning an attack at a school in the city and had used artificial intelligence in the potential planning.
The youth was arrested by the RCMP’s Federal Policing Eastern Region as part of an investigation by the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team. The investigation began a few weeks ago after intelligence was shared by the FBI.
Police said investigators had reasonable grounds to fear the suspect might commit crimes related to ideologically motivated violent extremism. He is also alleged to have posted threatening messages on Telegram targeting various groups.
The police operation was intended to disrupt the suspect’s alleged activities and seek a peace bond under Section 810.011 of the Criminal Code. The measure allows authorities to impose conditions and monitor an individual to reduce risks to public safety.
The youth was scheduled to appear Friday before the Youth Division of the Montreal courthouse.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the RCMP said all evidence will be analyzed. Charges may be laid at a later date.
The RCMP did not identify the school or the groups allegedly targeted in the Telegram messages.
Police said the operation was carried out as part of their work to combat ideologically motivated violent extremism, which the RCMP describes as a national priority.
