17-year-old charged with manslaughter in fatal hit-and-run of cyclist in Ahuntsic; could face adult sentence

A 17-year-old was formally charged Wednesday in youth court in connection with the death of an 18-year-old cyclist in Ahuntsic-Cartierville last week.

The accused, who cannot be named, was charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, dangerous driving causing death, failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in death and fleeing from a peace officer.

The prosecutor’s office says it could still lay additional charges during legal proceedings.

If convicted, the accused could reportedly receive an adult sentence.

Isaac Larrivée was riding his bike to class on Oct. 30 when he was struck – at the intersection of Jeanne-Mance and Henri-Bourassa streets – by a speeding vehicle suspected to have been stolen. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle was allegedly fleeing from Sûreté du Québec officers who were chasing the driver for traffic violations. Police say the driver abandoned the vehicle a few streets away and fled on foot.

Because the incident involved a police pursuit, Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), is investigating. The BEI has also tasked the SPVM with conducting a parallel investigation.

The accused remains detained and is expected back in court Monday for a bail hearing. The prosecution opposed his release on Wednesday.
