By Melanie Porco

A Black woman will serve as speaker of Montreal’s city council for the first time ever.

Martine Musau Muele has worked as a lawyer, a city clerk, Commissioner of the OCMP, and served almost eight years in the Canadian Armed Forces.

She was elected city councillor for the Villeray district on November 7th, running in her first election and winning by nearly 69 per cent of the vote.

Mayor Valérie Plante nominated her for the role and a vote of approval will be held Monday.

The official opposition says they will vote in favour of it.

The speaker’s role in city council is to ensure the rules of city council are followed, particularly during debates.

Muele is the second Black woman nominated to a high-profile position in Montreal’s new city council.

Dominique Ollivier will lead the executive committee, considered to be the second-most-powerful elected position in the city.

The nomination also making history as the first Black woman in that chair.
