Speed reduced to 10km/h in Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie alleyways

By News Staff

Residents of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie will be the first in Montreal to benefit from alleyways where drivers will have to respect a speed of 10 km/h or less. Until now, the maximum speed allowed for drivers of motor vehicles in Montreal alleyways has been 20km/h.

The borough’s decision comes on the heels of a pedestrian dying after a collision with a truck exiting an alleyway in Rosemont on March 31.

Police say a delivery truck coming out of the alley didn’t see the 57-year-old pedestrian, striking him and then rolling over his body. The man was later pronounced dead at the hospital and the truck driver was treated for shock. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.

On March 24, a four-year-old was hit by the driver of an SUV who was turning into an alley near Bloomfield and Lajoie, in Outremont.

The boy was admitted to hospital in critical condition with head injuries, but was declared out of danger hours later.

Safer public spaces for all

Many residents of the Rosemont borough are in favour of the new speed limit, saying they are constantly worried about delivery trucks, snowplows or recycling trucks driving in and out of alleyways, where children often play.

“Our desire is for alleys to be living environments, not public roads,” explained borough mayor François Limoges in an interview with La Presse.

A total of 140 alleys in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie have become “green alleys” in recent years. These back alleys are being reclaimed as green spaces that encourage better air quality and act as community hubs that encourage socialization.
