Quebec City Halloween sword attack trial suspended again due to COVID-19

The trial of a man charged in the Quebec City 2020 Halloween night sword attack has been postponed for a second time due to COVID-19, after another juror tested positive.
The first delay came on April 13 and now on Tuesday, a juror explained that they had been infected since the last sitting – which was April 21.
Justice Richard Grenier adjourned the trial until Wednesday.
Carl Girouard, 26, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the killings of Suzanne Clermont, 61, and Francois Duchesne, 56, in the historic Old Quebec district on Oct. 31, 2020.
He is also charged with five counts of attempted murder for allegedly injuring five other people with a sword that night.

The Criminal Code stipulates that a minimum of 10 jurors is required to deliver a verdict.
Girouard’s trial began April 11 and was expected to last between four and five weeks.
